Underpinning this instrumental case study is an effectuation lens. It investigates how a firm’s governance affects decision-making within international new ventures (INVs), which rapidly withdrew from markets abroad, regarding their re-internationalisation activities. Interviews with founding owners, exhibiting growth-oriented objectives, provide unique insights combination of and causation-oriented decision-making. In comparison to earlier studies that focus on the role mind-set management team, findings suggest stakeholders like angel investors may exhibit influence certain INVs’ internationalisation decisions. Some decision-makers view risks/rewards against objectives in subjective ways ‘loss credibility’ ‘fear missing out,’ rather than simply economic terms growth. New light shed importance validating internationalised business models ability pivot product-market strategies. Non-linear scale-up behaviour include temporary domestic market potentially re-internationalising different countries targeted prior de-internationalisation.

Social network theory suggests that social networks, particularly diverse ones, are crucial for entrepreneurial resource acquisition and success. However, previous research has found entrepreneurs do not necessarily develop networks but tend to associate with similar others closed networks. Building on problemistic search perceptual control theory, we propose as developing consumes cognitive time resources, more likely so when they face failure threats evaluate themselves able address the threats. An experiment 155 in China threat increases entrepreneurs’ diversity this effect is attenuated by self-affirmation. A longitudinal survey of 153 showed whose self-worth contingent upon business success rich structural holes short term dense long term, these effects self-efficacy. These findings highlight motivational factors driving contribute theory.
