Abstract Grocery retailers have a large amount of societally relevant data on food purchases in their databases, which they traditionally used merely for marketing purposes. However, despite the potential, so far been rarely sustainability‐related research. This study addresses key sustainability challenge—the reduction waste—by using retailers' customer and questionnaire. paper's purpose is to identify analyse household waste segments discuss actual purchasing behaviour patterns. By doing so, we also illustrate exemplify potential use loyalty card address global challenges related at consumer level. The utilizes an extensive set together with survey self‐reported reasons households. Utilizing cluster analysis, Phase 1 identifies six segments: no waste; trust date labels; safety first; occasional wasters; overpurchasers overpreparers; family first. These differ sociodemographic purchase profiles. In 2, these segments' examined further by applying tree‐based methods. contributes research studies sustainable retailing. Abstract This paper studies consumers’ reactions and resistance to being responsibilized for making climate-friendly food choices. While consumer responsibilization has been studied from an individual experiential perspective, we examine its collective characteristics. We do this by tracing the controversial marketing campaign of a Swedish poultry producer, encouraging consumers “do something simple climate” eating chicken rather than beef. In our analysis social media comments formal complaints protection authority, mobilize Foucault’s notion counter-conduct analyse subtle forms responsibilization. identified four interrelated yet distinct counter-conduct: challenging truth claims, demanding ‘more,’ constructing ‘the misled consumer,’ rejecting vilification.
