Not All Levels of Social Re-Inclusion Allow for Recovery from Negative Outcomes of Social Exclusion: The Moderating Role of Self-Esteem DOI Creative Commons

Previous studies on social exclusion have focused its adverse effects, rarely exploring how re-inclusion can aid recovery from exclusion-induced distress. The level of that help individuals recover exclusion, and whether the effect is influenced by individual characteristics are unclear. present experimental study extends Cyberball paradigm, adding a stage to explore effects four levels affect; furthermore, it tests moderating role self-esteem in effect. A total 154 Chinese college students participated experiment. Results showed (1) was effective when equal (replica re-inclusion) or greater than (moderate high over-re-inclusions) pre-exclusion inclusion, but ineffective below this (token re-inclusion); (2) positively predicted recovery, moderated self-esteem—the prediction for participants with middle self-esteem, not low self-esteem. These results discussed group process self-psychology perspective.
