Altered synaptic physiology clearly contributes to memory loss and other CNS symptoms in Alzheimer's disease. A new paper this issue of the Journal Disease, from Zhe Jin's group Uppsala, Sweden, adds important information help us understand how. powerful, yet largely uncharacterized form neuronal inhibition—GABA A, slow current—was studied using whole-cell recordings hippocampal brain slices AD model mice (tg-APPSwe). The investigators found that GABA inhibition was significantly reduced dentate granule neurons aged mice, compared both wild type adult non-aged mice. This reduction would nicely explain change excitatory-inhibitory balance previously reported animals, as well impairments pattern separation theta-gamma cross-frequency coupling are early manifestations AD.
