Conditions for Nutritional Care of Elderly Individuals with Dementia and Their Caregivers: An Exploratory Study DOI Open Access

Background/Objective: Although the context, personal conditions, and caregivers’ abilities influence nutrition of older people with dementia, adequate parameters are not always applied to identify these conditions. The aim this study was characterize nutritional care needs dementia their caregivers. Method: This descriptive exploratory conducted in Colombia. An intentional sample included 73 elderly individuals described participants’ characteristics GCPC-UN-D survey. Their conditions include medical history, objective tests, interviews. We used Edinburgh Scale evaluate feeding behavior QUALID tool quality life. measured caregiver competence using CUIDAR tool. Results: Adults 78.8 years on average, low middle socio-economic status, education levels, multiple comorbidities, have adverse well-being support except for spiritual component. These adults visible issues including muscle mass indices (47.9%), levels (arm 61.6%; calf 58.9%), vitamin D (50.7%), high cholesterol (57.9%) altered hematocrit red blood cell counts (46.4%). required supervision (41%) or help (23%) nutrition. Caregivers were predominantly women an average age 32.4 years, moderate caregiving competences (70.43%), experienced burden (83.6%), had orientation management (30.1%). Conclusions: Elderly significant problems. caregivers lacked ensure care. dyads need a strategy improve healthcare experience.
