Purpose This paper aims to discuss findings from a study which explored the lived experiences of leadership among owner-managers and employees growing entrepreneurial firms. In doing so it contributes conceptual development via shared theory qualitative empirical material. Design/methodology/approach The utilised qualitative, interpretivist comparative case approach. Findings were developed analysis 38 interviews conducted with organisational members 5 firms located in northwest England. illustrate an understanding leadership, is premised upon ownership characterized by three mutually interacting forms influence settings interest. These are: (1) hierarchical downward influence, includes (2) empowerment as means enabling they are positioned work processes (3) lateral peer within teams. Research limitations/implications also highlights importance contextual factor that may leadership. It offers recommendations for further research this regard develop research. Practical implications For practitioners, dynamics more collectivist approach how might be practiced trust, delegation on part leaders mutuality co-performance all involved collaboratively towards objectives associated venture-building.
