Evidence for negative reinforcement of alcohol use is mixed; one possible explanation this that people make value-based decisions whether to regulate their emotions via or an alternative, and only drink-to-cope when alcohol’s rein-forcing value larger than available alternatives. If the case, immediately following a emotional event should increase primarily in heavy drinkers, whereas light alternative ways coping be valued. We conducted preregistered online experiment (N = 200) with mixed design (between: vs drinker; within: negative/neutral/positive mood induction). In each three experimental sessions, participants first provided ratings set food stimuli. Second, they were subjected induction. Third, made forced choices between either two then applied drift diffusion model these data tested alcohol- food-related decision-making parameters are differentially affected inductions drinkers. analyses we found drinkers did not more but valued less after Exploratory uncovered both heavy- light-drinking induction if reported high craving at start session. Collectively, results provide some evidence idea drinking-to-cope might process.
