Abstract Rivers are considered key pathways for microplastics, transporting these pollutants from inland sources to marine environments. In this study, we investigated the seasonal fluctuations of microplastics in surface waters four major Latvian rivers (Daugava, Lielupe, Gauja, and Salaca) that flow into Gulf Riga. Sampling was conducted spring 2022 summer 2023 represent distinct environmental conditions. Using a Manta net (100 µm mesh size) samples were collected triplicate analysed microplastic concentration, shape, size, colour, polymer composition. Microplastic concentrations ranged 0.63 132.88 particles/m³, with highest levels observed River Salaca. Fibres fragments predominant shapes, polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylene propylene diene monomer being most abundant polymers. We found significant spatial variations some rivers, Salaca showing extreme fluctuations. However, overall, no correlation between suspended material river discharge variables. Replicate sampling revealed variability samples, highlighting need include replicas. These findings highlight complexity pollution dynamics careful consideration factors when assessing contamination. This article is first contribute data on growing pool information contamination waterways.
