Abstract
Rivers
are
considered
key
pathways
for
microplastics,
transporting
these
pollutants
from
inland
sources
to
marine
environments.
In
this
study,
we
investigated
the
seasonal
fluctuations
of
microplastics
in
surface
waters
four
major
Latvian
rivers
(Daugava,
Lielupe,
Gauja,
and
Salaca)
that
flow
into
Gulf
Riga.
Sampling
was
conducted
spring
2022
summer
2023
represent
distinct
environmental
conditions.
Using
a
Manta
net
(100
µm
mesh
size)
samples
were
collected
triplicate
analysed
microplastic
concentration,
shape,
size,
colour,
polymer
composition.
Microplastic
concentrations
ranged
0.63
132.88
particles/m³,
with
highest
levels
observed
River
Salaca.
Fibres
fragments
predominant
shapes,
polyethylene,
polypropylene,
ethylene
propylene
diene
monomer
being
most
abundant
polymers.
We
found
significant
spatial
variations
some
rivers,
Salaca
showing
extreme
fluctuations.
However,
overall,
no
correlation
between
suspended
material
river
discharge
variables.
Replicate
sampling
revealed
variability
samples,
highlighting
need
include
replicas.
These
findings
highlight
complexity
pollution
dynamics
careful
consideration
factors
when
assessing
contamination.
This
article
is
first
contribute
data
on
growing
pool
information
contamination
waterways.
