Abstract Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is less frequent in eukaryotes than prokaryotes, yet can have strong functional implications and was proposed as causal factor for major adaptations several eukaryotic lineages. Most cases of eukaryote HGT reported to date are inter-domain transfers only few studies investigated eukaryote-to-eukaryote HGTs. Furthermore, the extent which has contributed repertoire some lineages such vertebrates remains unclear. Here, we performed a large-scale survey among 242 species ray-finned fishes. We found evidence supporting 18 teleost-to-teleost events that involve 17 different genes 11 teleost fish orders. The involved these show lower synonymous divergence expected under vertical transmission, their phylogeny inconsistent with fishes, high nucleotide similarity on between donor recipient extends non-coding regions. distribution tree heterogenous, eight occurring same two orders (Osmeriformes Clupeiformes). Besides previously an antifreeze protein, most transferred play roles immunity, suggesting more likely others confer selective advantage species. Overall, our work shows occurred multiple occasions it will be worth further quantifying evaluating impact evolution genomes being sequenced.
