Pediatric obesity is a major public health problem, affecting nearly 20% of children and adolescents living in the United States. In 2023, American Academy Pediatrics released its first clinical practice guideline for evaluation management child adolescent recommended integrating behavior lifestyle interventions with pharmacological treatment when medically indicated. However, there limited evidence base to guide antiobesity medication decisions data on long-term safety during this critical period growth development youth. Thus, November National Institute Diabetes Digestive Kidney Diseases sponsored workshop identify knowledge gaps opportunities research use pharmacotherapy adolescents. Childhood obesity is inversely associated with household socioeconomic status in high-income countries.
