Introduction Loneliness and social isolation (SI) are critical public health issues with well-documented effects on well-being. However, much of existing observational intervention research has focused predominantly individual-and interpersonal-level factors. This longitudinal study addresses significant knowledge gaps by comprehensively examining the independent influence multiple community-level determinants loneliness SI uniquely comparing these across younger (18–30 year) older (60 + years) adults within an Australian population cohort over a 12-year period. Methods Using data from Household, Income Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey, we analysed four wave pairs (2006/07, 2010/11, 2014/15, 2018/19) to investigate associations between nine community neighbourhood-level variables. We employed lagged mixed-effects Poisson regression models calculate risk ratios (RR) adjusted for Results Our findings reveal that low engagement is strongest factor both (Loneliness, RR = 1.34; SI, 1.58) populations 1.35; 2.02). Low neighbourhood cohesion was found significantly increase 1.15; 1.36) (RR 1.54). also observed distinct age-specific effects, cultural practices, altruism, perceived safety having differential impacts age groups. Discussion highlight need interventions address suggesting focusing solely individual-related factors insufficient. Tailoring strategies enhance dynamics may be essential reducing among vulnerable populations, particularly areas offerings.

Therefore, aim this study develop typology coping strategies that lonely individuals use categorize such based on their perceived effectiveness or ineffectiveness. A nationally representative sample 621 adults provided 2878 they used, which allowed inductively creating set 19 categories strategies. Strategies ranged from relational (e.g., forming new relationships), behavioral healthy lifestyle changes), cognitive self-reflection). Results showed vary in success rate and, as such, were categorized being effective, mixed results, ineffective. Likewise, varied frequency also common, infrequent, rare. Patterns emerged showing certain are generally more effective than others; however, even most consistently viewed ineffective by some vice versa. We discuss our terms how align with existing theories act an update previous research topic, ways findings generate future directions.
