Increased e-cigarette use prevalence is associated with decreased smoking prevalence among US adults

Abstract
Background
If
US
adults
who
smoke
cigarettes
are
switching
to
e-cigarettes,
the
effect
may
be
observable
at
population
level:
smoking
prevalence
should
decline
as
e-cigarette
increases,
especially
in
sub-populations
with
highest
use.
This
study
aimed
assess
such
effects
recent
nationally-representative
data.
Methods
We
updated
a
prior
analysis
latest
available
National
Health
Interview
Survey
data
through
2022.
Data
were
cross-sectional
estimates
of
yearly
and
use,
respectively,
among
specific
age,
race/ethnicity,
sex
subpopulations.
Non-linear
models
fitted
observed
pre-e-cigarette
era,
range
‘cut-off’
years
explored
(i.e.,
between
when
e-cigarettes
first
introduced
they
became
widely
available).
These
trends
projected
forward
predict
what
would
have
been
if

had
continued
uninterrupted.

hypothesis
creates
a
valuable
opportunity
for
these
well-respected
impartial
authors
to
bridge
divide
in
opinion
by
working
with
all
sides
refine
definitions
of
'gateway'
types
subsequent
research.
