Abstract Background If US adults who smoke cigarettes are switching to e-cigarettes, the effect may be observable at population level: smoking prevalence should decline as e-cigarette increases, especially in sub-populations with highest use. This study aimed assess such effects recent nationally-representative data. Methods We updated a prior analysis latest available National Health Interview Survey data through 2022. Data were cross-sectional estimates of yearly and use, respectively, among specific age, race/ethnicity, sex subpopulations. Non-linear models fitted observed pre-e-cigarette era, range ‘cut-off’ years explored (i.e., between when e-cigarettes first introduced they became widely available). These trends projected forward predict what would have been if era had continued uninterrupted. The difference actual predicted (‘discrepancy’) was compared use each year investigate whether statistically associated Results Observed significantly lower than expected based on trends; these discrepancies grew increased, larger subpopulations higher younger aged 18–34. robust sensitivity tests varying design. Conclusions Population-level continue suggest that has declined an accelerated rate last decade ways correlated increased uptake

Tobacco use is the leading risk factor for diseases with highest incidence and mortality rates. control policies addressing main determinants of tobacco consumption, alongside traditional smoking cessation methods, have generally shown poor results, relatively low rates worldwide. For these reasons, it crucial to adopt innovative strategies while implementing changes in reduce prevalence. The emergence new nicotine delivery devices, which are less harmful than conventional tobacco, could potentially improve population-level impact use. New such as electronic cigarettes, heated products, pouches, offer alternatives. A common feature among devices that none produce toxic components amounts comparable those found combustible smoke. Although regulatory safety aspects still under debate by authorities worldwide, they demonstrated effectiveness cessation. Their role reducing harms increasingly recognized policies. Integrating into existing programs using standardized interventions may help address some challenges explore combinations prove more effective current treatments.

Unfortunately, it also highly polarized topic. Not only there no clear resolution (yet) embraced both [1, 2], but many studies published topic do not seem have changed anyone's mind. This seems be real-life example epistemological network model described O'Connor Weatherall [3] (see figures, particularly polarization one) whereby levels social trust conformity are such that more research does lead convergence truth. We hope researchers willing devote effort take risks work 'adversaries' will draw motivation from peers other fields taking same efforts.
