Abstract Social media addiction has previously been linked to compromised mental health and social isolation; however, most studies are cross-sectional or based on convenience samples. The objective of the current study was assess extent which predicts isolation (including bi-directionality) in a large prospective sample Danish adults. Data stem from nationwide longitudinal survey 1958 adults (aged 16+) conducted 2020 2021. Bergen Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS) used. Validated scales were used depression, wellbeing, loneliness. A total 2.3% screened positive for addiction. As compared no symptoms, associated with an elevated risk depression (OR = 2.71; 95% CI 1.08, 6.83) negatively wellbeing (coef −1.29; −2.41, −0.16). Similarly, loneliness 4.40; 1.20, 16.19), network size −0.46; −0.86, −0.06). There is need preventive actions against addictive use, as this poses significant functioning working age population.

BACKGROUND Young adults experience stressors in their transition to adulthood and are at increased risk of mental health challenges.
