Parental engagement in an early intervention program for anorexia nervosa: a qualitative study
Abstract
Anorexia
nervosa
(AN)
is
a
severe
chronic
condition
requiring
early
and
effective
intervention.
Family
involvement
considered
cornerstone
of
adolescent
treatment,
yet
the
specific
dynamics
parental
engagement
into
care
remain
poorly
understood.
This
study
aimed
to
explore
processes
underlying
in
for
adolescents
with
AN,
within
context
family-based
day
program
(EVAFAM)
France.
We
conducted
qualitative
using
semi-structured
interviews
15
parents
(7
fathers,
8
mothers)
whose
participated
EVAFAM
between
January
2023
June
2024.
identified
three
main
that
lead
care:
(1)
grieving
process,
where
recognized
nature
illness
their
emotional
responses
diagnosis;
(2)
an
active
reconstruction
adapted
attitudes
behaviors
become
therapeutic
partners;
(3)
relationship
institutional
framework,
which
provided
both
authority
support,
while
sometimes
generating
ambivalence.
Engagement
was
supported
by
increased
knowledge
structured
interventions
but
challenged
strain
uncertainty.
Notably,
intervention
enabled
families
shift
from
denial
participation,
suggesting
progressive
construction,
not
initial
precondition.
Understanding
trajectories
during
highlights
key
levers
supporting
families,
including
acknowledging
transitions,
providing
practical
tools,
reinforcing
alliances.
These
insights
can
inform
tailored
enhance
family-centered
AN.
