Abstract Purpose Accurate documentation is crucial in surgical patient care. Synoptic reports (SR) are structured checklist-based that offer a standardised alternative to traditional narrative (NR). This systematic review aims assess the completeness of SR compared NR colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery. Secondary outcomes include time completion, surgeon satisfaction, educational value, research and barriers implementation. Methods Prospective or retrospective studies assessed surgery procedures were identified through search Ovid MEDLINE; Embase (Ovid); CIHNAL Plus with Full Text (EBSCOhost); Cochrane. 1002 articles screened, eight met inclusion criteria after full-text 17 papers. Results Analysis included 1797 operative (NR: 729; SR: 1068). Across reporting this outcome, was significantly higher (P < 0.001). Reporting secondary limited, predominant focus on value. Several demonstrated reduced data extraction times when utilising SR. Surgeon satisfaction high, these seen as valuable tools for education. Barriers implementation integrating into existing electronic medical records (EMR) concerns regarding increased administrative burden. Conclusions advantages completeness, extraction, communication NR. Surgeons perceive them beneficial research, quality improvement teaching. supports necessity development user-friendly seamlessly integrate pre-existing EMRs, optimising care enhancing CRC documentation.

Abstract Synoptic operative notes for pediatric surgical oncology provide standardized and structured documentation of procedures performed on patients with cancer. These reports capture essential details such as preoperative diagnosis, intraoperative findings, technique, tumor characteristics in a concise uniform format. By promoting consistency, accuracy, completeness reporting, synoptic facilitate effective communication among multidisciplinary healthcare teams, enhance quality assurance efforts, streamline data extraction research purposes. The integration reporting within electronic medical record systems further enhances accessibility usability, ensuring efficient practices improved patient care outcomes oncology.
