Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is a highly useful synthetic polyester plastic that widely used in daily life. However, the increase postconsumer PET as waste recalcitrant to biodegradation landfills and natural environment has raised worldwide concern. Currently, traditional recycling processes with thermomechanical or chemical methods also result deterioration of mechanical properties PET. Therefore, it urgent develop more efficient green strategies address this problem. Recently, novel mesophilic PET-degrading enzyme (IsPETase) from Ideonella sakaiensis was found streamline at 30°C, albeit lower activity than chitinase chitinase-like enzymes. Consequently, molecular engineering PETases still required for further industrial applications. This review details current knowledge on IsPETase, MHETase, IsPETase-like hydrolases, including structures, ligand‒protein interactions, rational protein improved performance. In particular, applications engineered catalysts are highlighted, metabolic cell factories, immobilization surface display. The information expected provide insights complex polymers.

Plastic pollution is a ubiquitous and universally recognized environmental threat, bioplastics have emerged as potential solution to this issue in the last years. Being biobased biodegradable, reduced carbon footprint with respect plastics, they are not expected accumulate fragmentate environments plastics do. Nevertheless, some drawbacks such their slow biodegradation engineered (i.e., anaerobic digestion composting) natural soil water) been used by sceptics discredit bioplastics, induced policy makers use precautionary approach topic including ban of single products count inert materials organic fertilizers). Using simplified ecologic risk assessment analysis, Opinion paper aimed show that proven be intrinsically biodegradable always better choice than plastics. Having residence time about 1–10 years, likelihood causing harmful effects on living organisms 100–1000 times lower resides thousands years environments. Taking into consideration, asked revise recent regulations directives enhance diffusion fight plastic pollution. In sense, Single Use Directive 2019/904 may exclude bioplastic items from ban, European Regulation Fertilizers 2019/1009 residues fertilizers. Bioplastics collection within biowastes subsequent should also favoured, order force controlled biogas reduce leakage environment, resulting enhanced circularity products.

Abstract The early cannabis legalization movement was linked to the environmental movement, and although advocates envisioned an environmentally friendly industry, regulations market trends complicated matters. A seismic event for waste repurposing of electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) technology as “vape pens,” which are more accurately referred (ECDS). With adoption this technology, a stream that had lower weight largely compostable shifted become in (e-waste) (ECDS batteries) became 14 % 30 total sales, depending on year state. Unfortunately, passed since introduction ECDS devices frequently overlook often ignore could be classified hazardous or universal waste. This study is novel attempt estimate volume consumer packaging produced California each year, including ECDS-related e-waste, compare it with other types household (HHW) produced. Additionally, analyzed determine what degree state contributed influenced amount generated. In 2022, almost large 16,805 US tons (15,245,240 kilograms) HHW pharmaceuticals 2021. Although have robust infrastructure place reverse distribution, no such exists at scale. Despite rules around recycling being ambiguous, many businesses do engage collection sustainable practices California. Regulations must changed by regulators allow licensees better management options, will result less contamination, thus, cleaner cannabis.

Plastic waste present a slow degradation rate in nature, almost one thousand years, therefore it is important to address this type of pollution, by finding the most sustainable reducing percentage that ends up landfills or ocean. The negative impact include bioaccumulation organisms exposure micro nano plastics end environment from degrading macro directly products contain microplastic, like exfoliating personal care products.
