This research investigates youth participation in climate change politics and policymaking South Africa, responding to a notable lack of Global South-facing studies the literature on activism. Guided by our lead author’s substantial engagement Africa’s movement from 2014–2024 drawing upon semi-structured interviews with 12 young activists, we offer rich insights into Africans’ motivations participate policymaking. We then draw these series provocations for education. On investigating why participate, find that although they report similar intrinsic extrinsic their North counterparts, African activists place far greater emphasis situated awareness lived experience. further improve understanding how people perceive meaningful (in)justices this shapes is shaped therefore emphasise value incorporating both local case affective elements pedagogies encourage collective action. Ultimately, call an enhanced recognition inclusion as active contributors to, educators within, governance reconceptualization activism, policy key sites transformative learning.
