Abstract Tropical East Asia is home to over 1 billion people and faces massive human impacts from its rising population rapid economic growth. It has already lost more than half of forest cover the highest rates deforestation logging in tropics. Hunting trade wildlife products threaten all large many smaller vertebrates. Despite these problems, region still supports an estimated 15–25 per cent global terrestrial biodiversity thus a key focus for conservation. This book therefore deals with plants, animals, ecosystems they inhabit, as well diverse threats their survival options provides background knowledge region’s ecology needed by both specialists non-specialists put own work into broader context. The first edition was describe entire Asian tropics subtropics, southern China western Indonesia, second extended coverage include very similar Northeast India, Bangladesh, Bhutan. third updates contents gives prominence Anthropocene possible conservation responses. accessible style, comprehensive coverage, engaging illustrations make this advanced textbook essential read senior undergraduate graduate-level students studying tropics, authoritative reference professional ecologists, conservationists, interested amateurs worldwide.

Abstract Conservation performance payments (CPPs) aim to encourage coexistence between humans and large carnivores by tying species presence or abundance. While there is growing interest in the development of these programs, they remain subject little empirical research. Furthermore, no literature on CPPs for Africa, despite continent's global importance carnivore conservation fact that multiple such schemes are currently operation. This research establishes where how function identifies recurring challenges associated with their implementation. We conducted semi‐structured interviews representatives nine payment programs operating across five countries eastern southern Africa. find theoretical simplicity, local complexities, pragmatism mean significant variation operate. includes differences monitoring methods, governance, all aspects payments. Abstract Wildlife crime in protected areas remains a major challenge to conservation. However, little is known about the role of local communities providing information on illegal activities help improve law enforcement efforts areas. As an initial exploration this complex topic, we aimed understand perceptions authorities working directly with conditions under which people provide park rangers, using Murchison Falls Protected Area Uganda as case study. We used semi‐structured interviews and questionnaires staff from Authority nongovernmental organizations. There was consensus among participants that who are those have trusted relationships rangers; interact regularly community outreach rangers (either formally through programs or informal socializing); believe area benefits them their community. All respondents believed provided by can enable success wildlife investigations, but associated ethical issues must be addressed. This study indicates engaging conservation crucial for effective addressing crime.

Wildlife sightings are not always guaranteed. To address this risk, tour operators often offer a money-back guarantee as refund mechanism. However, studies have overlooked the influences of such mechanisms on tourists' participation decisions and tourism revenue. We conducted choice experiments to examine impact using case Amami rabbit in Japan. found that significantly tourists’ decision-making In particular, we expected tourist rate guide revenue vary drastically depending probability encounter. The maximum from with 90% chance was about 20 times larger than 10% chance. This indicates conserving wildlife maintain sighting raises benefits, creating win-win situation by balancing conservation development.
