Abstract Malnutrition and pesticide exposure are severe factors contributing to the current losses of honeybee colonies. As these stressors often occur combined, we studied synergistic effects different diets on food choice mobility Apis mellifera . We fed beehives with sources exposed bees sublethal doses thiacloprid. After that three types honey pollen were offered in separate assays behaviour towards was recorded. Thiacloprid significantly affected assay, increasing bees’ preference polyfloral honey, while pre-pesticide diet had no influence. The remained similar regardless treatments, as always preferred pollen. Interestingly, bee differently, depending previous diet. These results indicate is an important factor influencing susceptibility pesticides.

Flying social insects can provide model systems for in-flight interactions in computationally-constrained aerial robot swarms. The flying may be chemically modulated and quantified via recent measurement advancements able to simultaneously make precise measurements of insect wing body motions. This paper presents the first quantitative ethanol-exposed honey bee kinematics archival literature. Four high-speed cameras (9000 frames/sec) were used record motions (Apis mellifera) automated analysis was extract 9000 frame/sec bees' through data association, hull reconstruction, segmentation. kinematic changes induced by exposure incremental ethanol concentrations from 0% 5% studied using statistical tools. Analysis considered trial-wise mean maximum values gross wingstroke parameters, tested deviations significance Welch's t-test Cohen's d test. results indicate a decrease maximal heading pitch rates body, that roll rate is affected at high (5%). effects include stroke frequency amplitude increase 2.5% or greater concentrations, gradual inclination angle up concentration, more planar with increasing concentration according bulk analysis. These ethanol-exposure basis separate neighbor mediated interaction studies.

Abstract Various bioactive food compounds may confer health and longevity benefits, possibly through altering or preserving the epigenome. While are widely being marketed for human consumption as ‘improving longevity’ by counteracting harmful effects of poor nutrition lifestyle, claimed often not adequately documented. Using honey bee ( Apis mellifera ) a model species, we here employed multi-step screening approach to investigate seven on lifespan DNA methylation using ELISA whole genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS). A positive effect was detected valproic acid, isovaleric cyanocobalamin. For curcumin, found that shortening caused ethanol intake, restored when curcumin were co-administered. Furthermore, identified region specific changes result intake. Ethanol in fully partially blocked bees receiving together. Ethanol-affected curcumin-blocked differentially methylated regions covered genes involved fertility, temperature regulation tubulin transport. Our results demonstrate fundamental negative low dose associated present proof-of-principle how can be negated component curcumin. findings provide fundament further studies invertebrates.

Abstract Honey bees pollinate various crops and wild plants which ensures food security. However, in this modern world, are suffering. Decreasing global domesticated bee populations while the demand for agricultural pollination services is increasing a matter of concern. Colony losses driven by such factors or interactions as changing environmental conditions, exposure to agrochemicals, parasite pathogens attack decreased flower abundance diversity. All these stresses individually together affect immune system consequently fitness. Poor nutrition key stressor it directly suppresses reduces host resistance other stressors. To cope with stresses, honey have well-developed individual social systems initiate several defence reactions, but its activation, maintenance use detrimental survival occurs at cost health. This review summarizes causal their possible interaction responsible suppression bees.
