Abstract
Herbivorous
rodents
in
boreal,
alpine
and
arctic
ecosystems
are
renowned
for
their
multi‐annual
population
cycles.
Researchers
have
hypothesised
that
these
cycles
may
result
from
herbivore–plant
interactions
various
ways.
For
instance,
if
the
biomass
of
preferred
food
plants
is
reduced
after
a
peak
phase
cycle,
rodent
diets
can
be
expected
to
become
dominated
by
less
plants,
leading
crash.
It
could
also
taxonomic
diversity
increases
crash
cycle.
The
present
study
first
use
DNA
metabarcoding
quantify
two
functionally
important
boreal
species
(bank
vole
tundra
vole)
assess
whether
diet
changed
systematically
cyclic
phase‐dependent
manner.
We
found
spectrum
broad
both
but
with
little
interspecific
overlap.
There
was
no
evidence
systematic
shifts
metrics
between
phases
cycle
either
species.
While
species'
composition
moderately
seasons,
changes
were
small
compared
other
sources
variation—especially
differences
individuals.
Thus,
variation
attributed
marginal
relative
overall
flexibility.
Based
on
general
consumer‐resource
theory,
we
suggest
overlap
render
it
unlikely
generate
synchronous
propose
determining
dietary
niche
width
should
step
scientific
inquiries
about

populations.

Rodents
are
the
most
abundant
mammals
on
Earth,
prevalent
all
continents
except
Antarctica,
and
they
fulfill
important
ecological
roles
in
various
ecosystems.
Recent
progress
high-throughput
DNA-sequencing
technology
has
enabled
identification
of
diet
components
environmental
samples,

feces

stomach
contents,
through
DNA
metabarcoding.
Studies
using
this
method
have
begun
to
clarify
