Amazonian environments are being degraded by modern industrial and agricultural activities at a pace far above anything previously known, imperiling its vast biodiversity reserves globally important ecosystem services. The most substantial threats come from regional deforestation, because of export market demands, global climate change. Amazon is currently perched to transition rapidly largely forested nonforested landscape. These changes happening much too for species, peoples, ecosystems respond adaptively. Policies prevent the worst outcomes known must be enacted immediately. We now need political will leadership act on this information. To fail biosphere, we our peril.

Two factors have elevated recent academic and policy interest in tropical deforestation: first, the realization that it is a major contributor to climate change; second, revolution satellite-based measurement has revealed proceeding at rapid rate. We begin by reviewing methodological advances enabled of forest loss fine spatial resolution across globe. then develop simple benchmark model deforestation based on classic models natural resource extraction. Extending this approach incorporate features characterize developing countries—pressure for land use change, significant local global externalities, weak property rights, political economy constraints—provides us with framework fast-growing empirical literature economics tropics. There is growing evidence to suggest that there an increase in species extinction occurring globally. In this article, we briefly review the literature on economics of extinction, examining what meant by before explaining how has conceptualised this. The initial focuses largely renewable resources, particular fisheries, but subsequently evolved cover many aspects biodiversity across all physical scales, employing increasing array methodological tools. We also consider cultural and societal extinctions (e.g. local languages, knowledge) positively correlated with loss biodiversity, as well economist's outlook potential re-capture value post-extinction.

Ecosystem services play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance, providing essential functions. This study examines the trade-offs and synergies among five key ecosystem forests across different regions of Hunan Province, China. Various machine learning models are compared to predict service value (ESV) levels, with most effective predictive model identified. The SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) analysis is employed identify environmental management factors influencing services. Our findings reveal significant regional variations services, eastern western showing superior soil conservation forest nutrient retention. In contrast, southern regions, particularly karst areas, display fewer between likely due effectiveness policies. further reveals that such as precipitation during warmest quarter, central government compensation funds, timber harvesting volume strongly influence ESV. provides valuable insights for improving policy-making rapidly developing underscoring importance protection strategies sustainable development.

Abstract A growing body of empirical evidence suggests that land use change, and the resulting decline in both area quality natural habitats, contributes to an increased incidence disease humans. Despite calls leverage conservation policy address burden linked ecosystem potential benefits are unknown. Efficiently reducing infectious through policies initiatives is challenging because it requires balancing trade-offs depend on ecological socioeconomic factors. To assess some these trade-offs, we developed a dynamic model optimal when change affects overall disease. We compared net paths which cost from habitat loss included optimization with base case where ignored. found ignoring linkage between degradation planner’s problem reduces management, such as efforts, results significantly higher rates infection health costs.
