This study applies a social identity lens to show that, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dutch government’s classification of occupations and labor market sectors as essential versus non-essential imposed professional threat those categorized non-essential. Specifically, we hypothesized (1) that workers in Netherlands would report lower identification (PI) pandemic relative workers; (2) workers’ mandatory shift working from home fewer hours (partially) explain their PI (3) gender differences emerge impact categorization (non-)essential worker on levels; (4) negatively relate work productivity performance pandemic. Empirical evidence based three cross-sectional datasets sampled among population two peak waves infections national lockdowns (May/June 2020; Study 1: N = 371; November/December 2020, 2: 467; 3 735) all confirmed reported workers. Objective To explore the impact and mechanisms of COVID-19 on professional identity nursing students, providing theoretical practical insights to inform education reform. Method This study employed Colaizzi’s descriptive phenomenological method students’ experiences. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, data collection continued until information saturation was achieved. Data analysis followed seven-step approach: (1) reading all participants’ descriptions gain a general understanding, (2) extracting significant statements, (3) formulating meanings from these (4) organizing formulated into clusters themes, (5) developing an exhaustive description, (6) refining description fundamental structure, (7) validating findings by returning participants for feedback. Factors associated with professional identity are of interest to university health programs because its association successful student transition, retention, and progression into the workforce.
