ABSTRACT Sexual selection has been a popular subject within evolutionary biology because of its central role in explaining odd and counterintuitive traits observed nature. Consequently, the literature associated with this field study became vast. Meta‐analytical studies attempting to draw inferences from have now accumulated, varying scope quality, thus calling for synthesis these syntheses. We conducted systematic search create map report appraisal meta‐analyses on topics sexual selection, aiming identify conceptual methodological gaps secondary literature. also bibliometric analyses explore whether are gender origin authors meta‐analyses. included 152 meta‐analytical our map. found that most focused males certain animal groups (e.g. birds), indicating severe sex taxonomic biases. Meta-analyses are powerful synthesis tools that popular in ecology and evolution owing to the rapidly growing literature of this field. Although usefulness meta-analyses depends on their reliability, such as precision individual mean effect sizes, attempts reproduce meta-analyses’ results remain rare evolution. Here, we assess reliability 41 sexual signals by evaluating reproducibility replicability results. We attempted to: (i) sizes using datasets they provided; (ii) re-extracting 5703 from 246 primary studies used sources; (iii) extent relevant data missed original meta-analyses; (iv) replicate after incorporating re-extracted missing data. found many discrepancies between reported those generated our analyses for all attempts. Nonetheless, argue evaluated largely reproducible replicable because differences were small magnitude, leaving interpretation these unchanged. Still, highlight issues observed affected providing recommendations ameliorate them.

Abstract Simulation studies are essential tools to assess statistical methods. Functioning as controlled experiments, simulations generate data from known underlying processes. However, unclear or incomplete reporting of simulation can impact their interpretability and reproducibility, potentially leading the misuse While Morris et al. (2019, Stat Med, 38, p. 2074) recently provided guidance on planning conduct for method evaluation, there is currently no comprehensive set guidelines in ecology evolutionary biology. Here, we propose 11 items extending colleagues' guidance. These span across three stages: planning, coding analysis. We also clarify terminology related components broad purposes studies. To highlight our proposed with current practices, surveyed 100 articles evolution journals that included a study evaluating method. Our survey found room improvement more transparent ensure clear evaluation Most notably, only small proportion reported Monte Carlo uncertainty (17%; 17 out 98), 32% (32 100) did not provide code.
