In recent years, tourism and leisure districts have become a pivotal aspect of China’s development. Analyzing their spatial distribution characteristics driving factors is essential for fostering comprehensive district promoting sustainable development, while also facilitating the profound integration culture tourism. This study undertakes thorough investigation spatiotemporal patterns national-level in China, employing GIS statistical analysis techniques, including Average Nearest-Neighbor Index, Kernel Density Analysis, Standard Deviation Ellipse. Additionally, this research identifies principal affecting these through overlay analysis, buffer geographic detectors. The findings reveal that (1) exhibit notable clustering pattern, characterized by predominance eastern regions scarcity west, alongside higher concentration south compared to north, with gradual decline density. (2) High-density are predominantly located Yangtze River Delta Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei urban agglomerations, elevated density situated southwest (notably Sichuan, Chongqing, Guizhou, Yunnan provinces). centroids first third batches transitioned from southern northern locations. (3) population factor exhibits most substantial explanatory power regarding (q: 0.80528), followed added value tertiary industry 0.53285), whereas slope shows minimal influence 0.00876). Furthermore, distance rivers grade three above, conjunction density, constitutes primary combination influencing configuration 0.9101).
