ABSTRACT Aquaponics, a symbiotic farming of plants and fish, is promising solution to address global food security. While aquaponics contributes nutrient recovery, water reclamation, reduced land freshwater use, achieving consistent economically viable production remains substantial challenge. Several key issues in include maintaining optimal quality dissolved oxygen concentration, delivering balanced profile for plants, managing solids accumulation. However, recent advances new system designs, algal co‐cultivation, micro‐nanobubble technology, biofilter media, as well automation coupled with the Internet Things, Artificial Intelligence, robotics can improve performance these systems. Moreover, greater understanding microbiome across various components an aquaponic important improving relationships supporting favorable ecological dynamics. This, turn, promotes improved cycling, plant fish growth, overall performance. This review highlights several such advances, critically analyzing challenges faced during operation, offers future research directions. Through discussion on current knowledge gaps technological integration, microbiomes, this aims provide comprehensive framework advancing systems outline potential directions innovations.
