Abstract In attention to the Sustainable Development Goal 6, quality evaluation of water resources in Mexico is limited compared other regions. This study provided new data from Oriental Basin, an important socio-economic region with up 20% population growth over last decade by assessing groundwater Libres-Oriental aquifer (Ca–Mg–HCO 3 facies; F − : 2.5–9.9 mg/L; NO 75.3 mg/L) and Totolcingo Lake (Na–Cl 12.7–13.2 < 0.75 mg/L). Fluoride content grouped about 80% samples as promotor dental skeletal fluorosis. Nitrate Pollution Index suggested moderate pollution very significant 10% samples. Possible exposure older adults elderly pregnant women fluorosis all (Hazard Quotient > 1) Basin 55% them might also be causing infants suggest a potential health risk hotspot eastern-central Mexico. Even though did not contain enough cause methemoglobinemia, their boiling for drinking could enhance nitrate beyond WHO limit. Thus, mitigation techniques diminish risks consuming population.
