Abstract In second language acquisition research, the psychological factors associated with learning have been a prominent focus. The affective turn in and introduction of positive psychology this field further boosted research on roles learner (e.g. motivation) performance engagement). However, theoretical lens for investigating these variables requires clarification, some boredom) under-researched. Guided by background, study aims to explore complex relationships between learners’ basic needs, self-determined motivation, boredom behavioural engagement among 687 Chinese senior high school EFL learners from perspective self-determination theory (SDT). Quantitative data collection analysis revealed that students’ needs directly predicted engagement. Basic also indirectly through simple mediation chain motivation boredom. relationship was non-significant. findings enrich application SDT providing valuable implications teachers educators.
