During the Covid-19 pandemic, an online reflective writing workshop, Penning Pandemic, was developed to address well-being of U.S. Veterans Health Administration (VHA) health care employees (HCEs). By focusing on reflection, rather than craft writing, and operating as a safe space where diverse groups clinical nonclinical HCEs could share their work, workshops improved sense community, job satisfaction, professional personal interactions. Each workshop led by team two or three trained facilitators working with no more 15 participants, first through shared discussion published piece art, then prompt (a question phrase) which participants responded for 5–15 minutes. To maximize time efficiency employees, each cycle limited eight weekly 1-hour sessions. program initiated January 2021 (VA) Boston Healthcare System VA Connecticut HCEs; 2024, VHA authorized national expansion program, renamed Writes. An anonymous postworkshop survey administered all at end 8-week cycle. 131 respondents (75.7% response rate) strongly agreed that provided reflect (94.7%); tools effectively bear witness experiences this extraordinary (80.2%); community create, share, talk (91.6%); positive effect interactions (65.6%); lives outside work (74.8%). Responses did not differ statistically between sessions original leaders facilitators-in-training. This replicable scalable minimal cost using HCE without formal experience.
