Abstract. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has raised concerns about a potential increase of addictive behaviors. Adolescents are considered particularly vulnerable to problematic usage digital applications. For the first systematic investigation screen time and patterns over course pandemic, pre-pandemic survey on adolescent social media (SM) gaming use was extended longitudinal study. Here we present results two measurements points (pre-pandemic/under lockdown). Methods: A representative sample 1,221 adolescents (10–17 years) participated in an online 09/2019, 824 them 04/2020. Prevalence rates were measured at baseline with standardized scales covering ICD-11 criteria for patterns. These statistically compared related pre- under-lockdown time. Results: Pre-pandemic prevalence pathological SM/gaming 3 % each, at-risk 8–10 including more boys than girls. Usage frequencies times significantly increased under lockdown. predictive value decreased from before during Changes could not be predicted by pattern. Discussion: stability observed effects should further examined pandemic. This will lead relevant implications prevention measures allocation intervention resources.

Importance

Behavioral addictions were introduced as novel mental disorders in theInternational Classification of Diseases, 11th Revision, based on evidence that human behavior itself can become addictive, similar to addiction substances. However, previous studies prevention gaming disorder and unspecified internet use lacked randomization, follow-up measurements, diagnostic interviews assessed incidence rates; this trial was intended fill gap.

Objectives

To investigate whether the PROTECT (Professioneller Umgang mit technischen Medien [Professional Use Technical Media]) intervention reduce symptom severity prevent full syndrome subthreshold onset at-risk adolescents.

Design, Setting, Participants

A multicenter cluster randomized clinical conducted recruitment, screening, delivery, data collection among adolescents aged 12 18 years 33 high schools Germany.
