Electric vehicles provide the ability to substantially reduce or eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from transportation. Such utilize a fundamentally different powertrain technology compared conventional based on internal combustion of liquid fuels. In this series articles, we discuss material challenges related three key subsystems electric vehicles: batteries, power electronics, and permanent magnets. Given that currently occupy ~20% market share are projected rapidly rise, cross-cutting challenge among these systems is sustainability resilience global supply chain critical minerals enable adoption vehicles.
