Abstract Several lines of evidence suggest that the anterior pituitary hormone prolactin has a stimulatory role on immune function and pharmacological suppression secretion with dopamine‐agonist bromocriptine suppresses both humoral cellular immunity. Here, we describe effects prolactin‐suppression course experimental allergic encephalomyelitis in female Lewis rats. Initiation continuous treatment before immunization reduced severity incidence clinical signs acute encephalomyelitis. Experimental encephalomyelitis–immunized rats experienced threefold rise basal levels day 4 after maintained elevated 10, onset neurological Bromocriptine to those shamimmunized In vivo pretreatment inhibited splenic lymphocyte proliferative responses vitro immunizing antigen concanavalin A. Moreover, therapy was protective when initiated 1 week initial also effective late disease. These results indicate (1) are encephalomyelitis, (2) inhibits (3) inhibition is present begun sensitization, suggesting an effect prolaction effector limb response during
