As a tool serving other disciplines of enquiry, artificial intelligence (AI) offers the potential potent discovery, design and analysis paradigm to address (new) questions in urban planning. This thematic issue raises forum for cross-disciplinary dialogues at intersection planning AI. Nine articles discuss both emerging use cases practice relevant AI techniques being used developed, as well articulate challenges associated. Future development shall ethical, inclusive, just implications applications while navigating human agents’ interactions intra-actions facilitate better understanding intentions use, impacts on behaviour designers users complex practices.

In the contemporary urban landscape, walkability is shaped by spatial characteristics of built environment and its ability to adapt environmental risks, particularly those posed climate change. This study explores intersection flood adaptation strategies in waterfront public spaces across nine cities Baltic Sea Region, analysing their morphological with a focus on connectivity, accessibility, adaptability. Using mixed‐method approach that integrates mapping, quantitative metrics, qualitative analysis, comparative case studies, this research evaluates effectiveness structure transformations introduction blue‐green infrastructure, floating structures, nature‐based solutions enhancing while mitigating risks. The findings reveal significant improvements as indicated extended pedestrian route networks (increases 6%–28%), enhanced link–node ratios 24%–39%), substantial rise number nodes direct water access (150%–1900%). These results demonstrate climate‐adaptive design not only strengthens resilience but also fosters vibrant, walkable, socially inclusive spaces. provides valuable insights for planners, architects, policymakers, proposing integrate into walkable environments. By emphasising synergy between adaptation, advances discourse sustainable planning. highlight potential adaptable waterfronts, incorporating infrastructure flexible principles, enhance maintaining space quality accessibility.
