Abstract The conversion of biomass residues into syngas through gasification is attractive for energy and process industry applications. However, transportation, storage, operational challenges limit the conventional direct solid process. To address these issues, intermediate to bio‐oil has emerged as a promising alternative. Bio‐oil offers improved transport storage capabilities due its higher mass density, enabling decoupling supply demand. This study compares two routes production: indirect using from pyrolysis an with biochar gas supplying thermal stage. Biochar combustion provides about 1.4 MJ kg −1 dry maintain temperature at 480°C. Using AspenPlus® simulations, composition Low Heating Value produced by both are analyzed. Energy exergy analysis different equivalence ratios temperatures revealed that efficiencies than gasification. At 1000°C ratio 0.4, highest occurred in processes. efficiency amounted 62% 53%, respectively. same time, corresponding were 65% 61%. processes starting point produce energy, synthetic fuels, chemicals; this insights designing optimizing
