This study’s primary goal was to conduct an analysis on the flood propensity of Tabua (Ribeira Brava) drainage basin’s main watercourse. In addition that, this study also recommends two different methodologies in order mitigate flood’s impacts, namely by dimensioning a detention basin and adjusting riverbed roughness coefficient. Regarding propensity, it necessary resort geomorphological data, which obtained when characterizing watershed; that data crucial determine expected peak flow rate, according Gumbel Distribution methodology considering 100 years return period, perform tasks SIG ArcGIS software. Lastly, analyzed capacity river mouth, conclude whether would have drain total volume rainwater if extreme event happen. Indeed, results point out watershed’s mouth doesn’t cope with event, for period considered. As consequence mitigation measures aforementioned were developed specific features: sizing estimated through Dutch Method Simplified Triangular Hydrograph Method, while adjustment coefficient considered valid solution enhance mouth.

Climate-induced hydrological risks and deteriorating infrastructure present major challenges for small river basins in border regions, particularly non-EU countries with limited institutional capacity funding. These issues are especially acute post-socialist contexts, where outdated hydrotechnical systems no longer meet current environmental safety standards. This study investigates the vulnerabilities of Uzh River basin Uzhhorod, Ukraine—a city strong ecological ties to neighboring EU regions—and proposes an adaptive management model tailored such environments. An integrated assessment flood protection systems, sediment transport, drainage performance, governance gaps was conducted inform proposed framework, which combines structural ecosystem-based interventions a focus on transboundary water governance. Unlike many existing approaches that lack mechanisms localized implementation cross-border coordination, this offers transferable, evidence-based methodology enhancing resilience sustainability similar urban areas. The insights relevant cities across Eastern Europe, Western Balkans, South Caucasus, contributing both engineering practice regional policy by aligning solutions cooperative climate adaptation strategies.

The development of the stormwater management strategies, e.g., low-impact (LID), water-sensitive urban design (WSUD), and sustainable drainage solutions (SUDS), was initiated in mid-1980s as a set engineering approaches technologies to reduce harmful effects stormwater. Over time, all them evolved holistic, multidisciplinary and, today, they are increasingly viewed implemented under umbrella term “Nature-based Solutions” (NbS). technical elements measures these NbS represent various solutions, i.a., according suitability site achieve their maximum efficiency. Currently, there no standards or procedures for application Serbia. To overpass this encourage implementation, we carried out preliminary assessment eight settlements Region Southern Eastern is based on publicly available data performed existing recommendations field spatial planning rainwater WSUD. analyses were conducted by GIS tools that involved terrain characteristics provided an insight into criteria, i.e., constraints key placement elements, including bioretention, rain garden, permeable pavement. Research findings point creation thematic maps with area ratings individual might good starting further investigation, planning, design. proposed framework potentially useful countries regions without regulations management.
