Integrating Resilient Water Infrastructure and Environmental Impact Assessment in Borderland River Basins

Climate-induced
hydrological
risks
and
deteriorating
infrastructure
present
major
challenges
for
small
river
basins
in
border
regions,
particularly
non-EU
countries
with
limited
institutional
capacity
funding.
These
issues
are
especially
acute
post-socialist
contexts,
where
outdated
hydrotechnical
systems
no
longer
meet
current
environmental
safety
standards.
This
study
investigates
the
vulnerabilities
of
Uzh
River
basin
Uzhhorod,
Ukraine—a
city
strong
ecological
ties
to
neighboring
EU
regions—and
proposes
an
adaptive
management
model
tailored
such
environments.
An
integrated
assessment
flood
protection
systems,
sediment
transport,
drainage
performance,
governance
gaps
was
conducted
inform
proposed
framework,
which
combines
structural
ecosystem-based
interventions
a
focus
on
transboundary
water
governance.
Unlike
many
existing
approaches
that
lack
mechanisms
localized
implementation
cross-border
coordination,
this
offers
transferable,
evidence-based
methodology
enhancing
resilience
sustainability
similar
urban
areas.
The
insights
relevant
cities
across
Eastern
Europe,
Western
Balkans,
South
Caucasus,
contributing
both
engineering
practice
regional
policy
by
aligning
solutions
cooperative
climate
adaptation
strategies.

A Framework for Assessing Nature-Based Urban Stormwater Management Solutions: A Preliminary Spatial Analysis Approach Applied to Southeast Serbia

The
development
of
the
stormwater
management
strategies,
e.g.,
low-impact
(LID),
water-sensitive
urban
design
(WSUD),
and
sustainable
drainage
solutions
(SUDS),
was
initiated
in
mid-1980s
as
a
set
engineering
approaches
technologies
to
reduce
harmful
effects
stormwater.
Over
time,
all
them
evolved
holistic,
multidisciplinary
and,
today,
they
are
increasingly
viewed
implemented
under
umbrella
term
“Nature-based
Solutions”
(NbS).
technical

NbS
represent
various
solutions,
i.a.,
according

efficiency.
Currently,
there
no
standards
or
procedures
for
application

study’s
primary
goal
was
to
conduct
an
analysis
on
the
flood
propensity
of
Tabua
(Ribeira
Brava)
drainage
basin’s
main
watercourse.
In
addition
that,
this
study
also
recommends
two
different
methodologies
in
order
mitigate
flood’s
impacts,
namely
by
dimensioning
a
detention
basin
and
adjusting
riverbed
roughness
coefficient.
Regarding
propensity,
it
necessary

geomorphological
data,
which
obtained
when
characterizing
watershed;

peak
flow
rate,
according
Gumbel
Distribution
