The southern Mendoza province, located in the northern region of Patagonia, was inhabited by hunter-gatherer groups until historic times. Previous archaeological studies have reported canid remains among faunal assemblages, which were assumed to be part human diet. However, taxonomic identification and significance these canids within raised questions. In this study, we used ancient DNA analysis, morphological examination stable isotope analysis (δ 13 C col δ 15 N) re-evaluate assignment a discovered at Late Holocene burial site Cañada Seca. identifications suggested that it belonged genus Lycalopex , but our results conclusively demonstrate individual belongs extinct fox species Dusicyon avus . This finding expands avus’ known geographical distribution Patagonia’s extremity. Furthermore, statistical predictions based on genetic divergence undermine hypothesis hybridization between Canis facilitated introduction domestic dogs, played role extinction species. On other hand, findings indicate shared similar diet probably buried alongside humans, suggesting close relationship two during their lives deaths.
