Abstract This chapter considers why adolescence and emerging adulthood are the most sensitive life periods for nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) summarizes knowledge about course developmental risk protective factors of NSSI. includes a literature review on associations between NSSI early trauma, personality identity development, emotion regulation, cognitive vulnerabilities, mental disorders, parenting family relationships, peer relationships. The authors then evaluate possible consequences engaging in as an adolescent or adult discuss how we can intervene to address among young people. Finally, formulate recommendations further our understanding move into next decade research. One main suggestions is consider variation future prospective studies well increased focus prevention intervention.

Non-suicidal self-injury behavior (NSSI) is a serious public health concern that requires immediate attention. Despite the high prevalence of NSSI among Chinese population, there significant gap in research on comprehensive picture this field. Therefore, scoping review was conducted to investigate prevalence, methods, risk factors, and preventive intervention programs related China. The found estimated lifetime youth population alarmingly at 24.7% (N = 1,088,433). Common methods include scratching, hitting, biting. Additionally, synthesized 249 factors based biopsychosocial-ecological framework, highlighting urgent need for intervention. However, only 12 empirical studies focus prevention or were included. These findings underscore necessity more clinical practices larger identify effective interventions ultimately alleviate burden population.FundingThis supported by Humanity Social Science Youth foundation Ministry Education (22YJCZH018), Technology Innovation 2030 (STI2030-Major Projects: 2021ZD0200702), National Natural Foundation China (81825009), Shuimu Tsinghua Scholar. Although non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is known typically to begin in adolescence, longitudinal information lacking about patterns, predictors, and clinical outcomes of NSSI persistence among emerging adults. The present study was designed (1) estimate during the college period, (2) identify risk factors high-risk students for (3) evaluate association with future mental disorders suicidal thoughts behaviors (STB).Using prospective cohorts from Leuven College Surveys (n = 5915), part World Mental Health International Student Initiative, web-based surveys assessed health psychosocial problems at entrance three annual follow-up assessments.Approximately one five (20.4%) reported lifetime entrance. estimated 56.4%, 15.6% reporting a high-frequency repetitive pattern (≥five times yearly). Many hypothesized were associated persistence, most potent effects observed pre-college characteristics. Multivariate models suggest that an intervention focusing on 10-20% highest predicted could effectively reach 34.9-56.7% (PPV 81.8-93.4, AUC 0.88-0.91). Repetitive first two years 12-month disorders, role impairment, STB third year, including suicide attempts. Most adults history report persistent their years. Web-based screening may be promising approach detecting highly characterized by subsequent adverse outcomes.

Background Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a major global health concern. The limitations of traditional clinical and laboratory-based methodologies are recognized, there pressing need to use novel approaches for the early detection prevention NSSI. Unfortunately, still lack basic knowledge descriptive nature on NSSI, including when, how, why occurs in everyday life. Digital phenotyping offers potential predict prevent NSSI by assessing objective ecological measurements at multiple points time. Importance A major portion of adolescents and adults seeking psychiatric treatment report nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) within the past month, yet short-term course NSSI among these patients remains poorly understood. Objective To advance understanding cognitions (ie, thoughts, urges, self-efficacy to resist self-injury) behavior. Design, Setting, Participants cohort study was conducted using an intensive longitudinal design with ecological momentary assessment, including 6 daily surveys event registrations for 28 days. Data were collected from June 2021 August 2023. Individuals mental health services in Flanders region Belgium reporting past-month urges and/or behavior at intake recruited by referral. Main Outcomes Measures Nonsuicidal self-efficacy, Sociodemographic clinical baseline characteristics served as between-person variables. Descriptive variability statistics dynamic structural equation modeling used. Results completed a mean (SD) 121 (34.5) surveys, totaling 15 098 assessments (median adherence, 78.6%; IQR, 59.5%-88.7%). Among 125 (87.2% female; median age, 22.0 [range, 15-39] years; 52.8% heterosexual), thoughts present during most but low intensity (individual means [SD] on 0- 6-point scale, 1.52 [1.13] urges; 1.57 [1.18] thoughts). The prevalence 84.0% monthly, 49.90% weekly, 18.19% daily. Between-patient substantial (intraclass correlation coefficient, 0.43-0.47; range individual cognitions, 0-6; frequency behavior, 0-103), recency consistently associated differences NSSI. greatest observed (root square successive 1.31 1.40 instability thoughts), characterized changes more than 1 within-person SD between less 2 hours apart 5 instances. is rare morning, increased afternoon, frequent evening. contemporaneous temporally each other’s course, higher-than-usual lower uniquely signaling heightened risk next hours. Conclusions Relevance In this treatment-seeking individuals, appeared be over short term. These findings suggest potential utility self-monitoring outside therapy setting need focus assessment interventions evening
