Exploring Effects of Chatbot-based Social Contact on Reducing Mental Illness Stigma DOI Open Access

Chatbots have been designed to provide interventions in mental healthcare. However, how chatbot-based social contact can mitigate stigma illness remains under-explored. We two chatbots that deliver either first-person or third-person narratives about and evaluated them using a mixed methods study. Compared web survey group, participants both chatbot groups decreased their beliefs individuals are personally responsible for illnesses, increased intentions help. The rapid development of China's 5G 'Internet Plus' industry has led to increasing use the Internet provide healthcare services. Internet-based services in China are already widely used prevent, identify, monitor, and manage mental disorders, but few these have been formally evaluated. To a clear baseline this rapidly evolving field, we searched articles published before December 31, 2022, about internet-based interventions surveys for health-related conditions five international databases (Web Science, PubMed, PsycINFO, Embase, Cochrane Library) four Chinese (CNKI, SinoMed, VIP, WanFang). 143 identified studies-54 89 English-described individuals with community residents, college students, older adults, pregnant women, health professionals. number studies, which were mainly conducted economically developed regions country, quadrupled after 2019 onset COVID-19 pandemic. Available studies suggest-but do not prove-that can reduce severity psychiatric symptoms, decrease costs, improve quality life disorders. Chatbots are increasingly being used in mental healthcare - e.g., for assessing mental-health conditions and providing digital counseling have been found to considerable potential facilitating people's behavioral changes. Nevertheless, little research has examined how specific chatbot designs may help reduce public stigmatization of illness. To fill that gap, this study explores stigmatizing attitudes toward illness be affected by conversations with chatbots 1) varying ways expressing their interpretations participants' statements 2) different styles self-disclosure. More specifically, we implemented tested four varied terms whether they interpreted comments as or non-stigmatizing, provided stigmatizing, no self-disclosure chatbot's own views. Over the two-week period experiment, all chatbots' our participants centered on seven mental-illness vignettes, featuring same character. We non-stigmatizing performed best at reducing attitudes, while one self-disclosures had least beneficial effect. also discovered side effects self-disclosure: notably, were perceived inflexible strong opinions, which undermined credibility. These microaggressions, defined as brief commonplace verbal, behavioural, or environmental indignities, often convey derogatory messages to marginalized groups, including those issues. It is an innovative approach that engages “readers” from general public to have collaborative conversations with “books” minority or marginalized learn about their lived experiences and reduce stigma stereotypes. While HL popularized, its research base implementation structure remain limited. This systematic narrative review aims literature (1) summarize design, implementation, processes, outcomes of existing programs (2) synthesize recommendations for future more effective, ethical, sensible HL.
