Wearable sensor technologies are becoming increasingly relevant in health research, particularly the context of chronic disease management. They generate real-time data that can be translated into digital biomarkers, which provide insights our and well-being. Scientific methods to collect, interpret, analyze, translate from wearables biomarkers vary, systematic approaches guide these processes currently lacking. This paper is based on an observational, longitudinal cohort study, BarKA-MS, collected wearable physical rehabilitation people living with multiple sclerosis (MS). Based experience we discuss ten lessons learned relation biomarker development across key study phases. We then summarize a guiding framework (DACIA) aims informs use for management future research teaching.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease characterized by mobility impairments that limit physical activity and reduce quality of life. While traditional clinical measures participant-reported outcomes provide valuable insights, they often fall short fully capturing the complexities real-world mobility. This study evaluates predictive value combining sensor-derived to better forecast prospective levels in individuals with MS. Forty-six participants MS completed surveys assessing fatigue, concern about falling, perceived walking ability (MSWS-12), alongside sensor-based assessments gait balance. Over three months, wore Fitbit devices monitor activity, including step counts total levels. Forward stepwise regression revealed combined model explained most variance future MSWS-12 backward velocity emerging as key predictors. These findings highlight importance integrating subjective objective more comprehensive understanding patterns approach supports development personalized interventions aimed at improving mobility, increasing enhancing overall life for

Abstract Objectives This article describes the design and evaluation of MS Pattern Explorer, a novel visual tool that uses interactive machine learning to analyze fitness wearables’ data. Applied clinical study multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, addresses key challenges: managing activity signals, accelerating insight generation, rapidly contextualizing identified patterns. By analyzing sensor measurements, it aims enhance understanding symptomatology improve broader problem exploratory data analysis. Materials Methods Following user-centered approach, we learned clinicians have 3 priorities for generating insights Barka-MS data: exploration search for, contextualization of, sequences patterns in patient sleep activity. We compute meaningful patients using clustering proximity search, displaying these with an interface composed coordinated views. Our posed both closed open-ended tasks participants, utilizing scoring system gauge tool’s usability, effectiveness supporting generation across 15 clinicians, scientists, non-experts. Results Discussion present analytics helps better address complex data-centric challenges by facilitating It enables innovative analysis leads rapid temporal data, within between cohort. results indicate consistent performance participant groups effective support tracker implementation offers broad applicability research, allowing potential expansion into cohort-wide comparisons or studies other chronic conditions. Conclusion Explorer successfully reduces signal overload currently experience introducing opportunities exploration, sense-making, hypothesis generation.
