To analyse the prevalence of depressive symptoms in centenarians, identify their predictors, and explore role functional dependence as a contributing factor. Cross-sectional baseline data from Swiss Centenarian Study (n = 102), including community-dwelling institutionalised participants with complete on capacity. Functional capacity was assessed using Older Americans Resources Services Multidimensional Assessment Questionnaire. Depressive were measured Geriatric Depression Scale - Short Form. Group differences analysed Chi-squared tests; relationships examined correlations. Multiple linear regressions identified predictors. Mediation analysis explored interplay between capacity, living situation, symptoms. varied, basic activities daily generally better preserved than instrumental activities. Almost one-fourth screened positive for possible clinical depression, which significantly more common among centenarians (p < .05). Health conditions, anxiety, lower significant predictors together explained 24.7 % variance, anxiety being strongest predictor followed by health conditions showed that mediated relationship situation symptoms, highlighting its critical mental health. A proportion underscoring need greater attention to systematic screening. Targeted interventions promoting independence may play an important prevent strategies are needed encourage very old individuals re-develop maintain certain level independence.
