Abstract Records from freshwater sponges on Bulgarian territory are scarce. Only two exist in the scientific literature, one Zhrebchevo Dam and part of Danube River near border with Serbia. Inland lotic ecosystems such as channels, streams, rivers, well lentic ecosystems, were not studied for this potential biological indicator. Due to existing knowledge gap, studies entire rivers other aquatic focused monitoring or physicochemical quality elements should be vigilant Spongillidaе family representatives since even their random discovery identification could great importance. Such records can considered interesting gaining distribution, species richness, habitat preference particular environmental variables dependencies. We investigated macroinvertebrates macrophytes 16 sampling sites a river length about 200 km watershed 1600 km2 register Spongilla lacustris individuals at without any significant hydro-morphological pressure big dams. Our results serve program optimization that aims investigate rare protected dependent seeking more localities established populations. This achieved by directing efforts have similar habitats hydraulic connection found specimens.
