Abstract The vocal structure of gibbons has long been believed to be under strong genetic control and consistent with phylogeny. Gibbon vocalizations show hierarchical structures song coordination behaviors, which may have different functions convey distinct information compared basic notes. However, previous studies not at multiple levels across species. We the three Nomascus species in wild South China, namely western black gibbon ( concolor ), Cao vit N. nasutus Hainan hainanus ) note (six features four types notes), male sequence (eight features), (four overlap pattern between female songs). selected 15 recordings for each species: groups, 2006 2021), (seven 2008 2020 2021). used permuted random forest analysis test differences contribution acoustic level. construct a clustering tree, it phylogenetic relationships. found significant all except boom note. Acoustic similarity did match pre-modulated notes, suggesting that are only factor leading structures. also contributions differentiation levels. Our study suggests we need compare understand their evolution.

Abstract Vocal communication plays an important role in survival, reproduction, and animal social association. Birds mammals produce complex vocal sequence to convey context-dependent information. Vocalizations are conspicuous features of the behavior most anuran species (frogs toads), males usually alter their calling strategies according ecological context improve attractiveness/competitiveness. However, very few studies have focused on variation anurans. In present study, we used both conventional method network analysis investigate repertoire, sequence, call structure serrate-legged small treefrogs Kurixalus odontotarsus. We found that male K. odontotarsus modified by switching different types increasing repertoire size presence a competitive rival. Specifically, compared with before after playback advertisement calls, emitted fewer but more aggressive encounter compound calls during period. Network revealed mean degree, closeness, betweenness networks significantly decreased period, which resulted lower connectivity. addition, increased proportion one-way motifs average path length also indicated connectivity context. did not display clear small-world structure, regardless Our study presents paradigm apply anurans has implications for understanding evolution function patterns.

Variation in signal complexity is common among different species. Understanding why some species have evolved extensive call can offer insight into the evolution of complex signals. In this study, we investigated functions types a treefrog using network analysis, male playback experiments, and correlation analysis between properties body size. Our results show that treefrogs produce three kinds notes be combined to single-note as well composite calls. We also identified an intermediate note type advertisement suppress call, indicating calls may from The revealed functional distinction Additionally, our study dominant frequencies size calling males. Male frogs combine sequences form graded calls, which perform communication functions. indicate needs drive complexity, provides new evidence social hypothesis deeper insights function animal acoustic communication.
