Abstract The words we choose to describe our research ultimately directs its course. A dominant term in soil science now, is ‘sequestration’, referring the removal of carbon (C) from air and irreversible seclusion soil, ideally as stable organic (SOC). An emerging view, however, now sees SOC an inherently dynamic assemblage forms, all potentially vulnerable decay, with no discrete, measurable fraction holding C ‘sequestered’ form. Rather than speaking then, might refer instead ‘stewardship’. This word, enfolds entire spectrum SOC, not merely some elusive ‘persistent’ or ‘stable’ fraction, perhaps redirecting inquiry; for example, does need be form serve effective repository excess atmospheric CO 2 ? ‘Stewardship’ explicitly accepts relentless turnover emphasizing manage only fixed stocks C, but also cyclical flows through ecosystems that drive their functions. Among other benefits, ‘stewardship’ motivate us consider functions (not climate mitigation), cycle enhancing C), preserve existing troves augmenting them selected places.) Perhaps most fundamentally, by etymology, poses a compelling, timeless question: whom do steward SOC? Asking why look after reflects own underlying quest resilience, expands potential audience entices more creative minds must succeed us. Although may elicit new fruitful inquiry, even evocative, alluring, true mandate living well within circling always sustain
