The efficiency of the management predations on livestock by gray wolves ( Canis lupus ) through culling is under debate. Evaluating wolf requires to simultaneously analyze effects population and repercussions these changes predation. This protocol technically difficult implement in field. To properly assess efficiency, we provided an integrated flexible individual‐based model that simulated interactions between dynamics, predation behavior management. We considered many social processes wolves. calibrated match Western Alps as a case study. By considering prey community this area opportunistic nature predation, assumed at territory level increased with pack's food needs. Under assumption availability high vulnerability uniform space time, maintained size risks low levels. Contrary what was expected, decreased mean annual proportions dispersing our simulations, speeding settlement. population‐level mechanism compensated for mortality pack instability caused culling. Compensation however dependent selectivity timing When executed before natural module model, selective could undermine replacement lost breeders therefore decrease resilience Our gives insights about one specific context, but do not expect necessarily holds other ecological contexts encourage further explorations model.

Livestock predation can pose socio-economic impacts on rural livelihoods and is the main cause of retaliatory killings carnivores in many countries. Therefore, appropriate interventions to reduce livestock predation, lower conflict promote coexistence are needed. guarding dogs have been traditionally used yet details regarding use dogs, especially number per herd effectively required, rarely studied. In this study, we assessed how presence a losses leopard wolf corrals at night grazing grounds day-time. Using systematic interview surveys (2016-2019), documented sheep/goat attack (predation rates) from 139 shepherds across 32 villages around Golestan National Park, Iran. We analysed effects shepherds, seasons, corral quality, number, dog size, distance reserve rates using generalized linear models. For model, significantly decreased (β = –1.80, 95% confidence interval –2.61 –0.81) during day-time 1.41 individuals attack. attacks night, –0.29, –0.54 –0.04) with increasing numbers. Also, shepherd –0.56, –1.10 –0.10) size –0.36, –0.60 –0.12) reduced rates. –0.93, –1.74 Our study suggests that (1) reduce, but not eliminate, by leopards day-time; (2) every additional dog, wolves likely decrease average 25.2%; (3)

Wolf ( Canis lupus ) populations have recovered and expanded across many parts of the world thanks to conservation efforts, including improved legal status restoration their prey. Concurrently, public concerns regarding risk wolf attacks on humans livestock are increasing as wolves occupy human-dominated landscapes. We examined a unique case in Europe allegedly involving death female British tourist, aged 64, northern Greece September 2017. This incident received extensive international media attention yet fundamental details area lacking, whether local guarding dogs played role. To assist resolving case, we conducted an literature review which documented 13 criteria linked either and/or dog attacking human. also camera trap survey (October December 2017) soon after fatal attack calculate activity overlap among humans, wolves. Sufficient data were available for assessing 11 criteria. For remaining two, required not analysed (i.e. canid DNA collected from site), appropriately mouths suspected dogs) or collected, but misinterpreted post-consumption patterns victim’s corpse). Via this combination evidence, conclude that involved attack. assertion is supported by evidence such the: a) high dog-human at site peaked during time opposed near zero wolf-human same time, b) presence large pack unsupervised dogs, c) ratio male pack, d) close vicinity owner’s property e) previous aggression these towards humans. The consumption patterns, scale location remains indicate posthumous corpse possibly wild scavengers A multidisciplinary approach, one, assessment putative wildlife can reduce misidentifications responsible species forensic authorities and, therefore, prevent unfounded decrease tolerance carnivores.
