Abstract Over the past century, inefficient use of reactive nitrogen (N r ) has raised concerns regarding global food production and planetary sustainability. This study investigates (N) losses in tomato near Kabul, Afghanistan, aiming to improve efficiency (NUE) for enhanced security environmental protection. Three fertilizer treatments were tested: (A) animal manure + ¼ dose chemical fertilizer, (B) night soil (C) full with sub-treatments varying N application (25% less, 25% excess, farmers’ practice). A no-fertilizer control treatment was included. Nitrogen through ammonia emissions nitrate–N leaching monitored, while balances NUE calculated. The findings revealed that decreased by 33% 2 30% B 3 compared surface application. However, peaked at 145 kg ha −1 128 , positive observed across treatments, highest being 300 A. ranged from (A B) 55% (control), highlighting widespread overapplication Afghan agriculture. demonstrates efficient management practices can reduce maintaining yield, offering a novel pathway toward sustainable farming region.
