At convergent margins, plates collide producing a subduction process. When an oceanic plate collides with continental plate, the denser (i.e., oceanic) subducts beneath less dense (continental) plate. This process results in transportation of carbon and other volatiles into Earth’s deep interior is counterbalanced by volcanic outgassing. Sampling deeply-sourced seeps fumaroles throughout margin allows us to assess processes that control inventory their interaction subsurface microbial communities. The Andean Convergent Margin volcanically active four distinct zones: Northern Volcanic Zone, Central Southern Zone Austral which are each characterised significantly different parameters like crustal thickness, age angle. These differences can change dynamics along margin, possibly influencing recycling efficiency its We carried out scientific expedition, sampling ~800 km segment northern Chile, between 17 °S 24 °S, fluids, gases sediments, effort understand interactions microbiology, crust, tectonic parameters. collected samples from 38 sites, representing wide diversity seep types geologic contexts. Here we report field protocols descriptions sites collected.
