Comparing color qualia structures through a similarity task in young children versus adults

Examination
of
the
subjective
qualitative
aspects
an
experience,
or
“qualia”
in
short,
is
a
fundamental
and
core
aspect
consciousness
research.
How
can
we
characterize
particular
quality
redness,
i.e.
red
quale?
Based
on
recent
proposal
structural
characterization
qualia,
which
did
not
rely
verbal
descriptions,
developed
task
that
obtained
pairwise
similarity
judgments
at
four
graded
levels,
with
easy
intuitive
visual
interfaces
designed
to
engage
young
children.
We
examined
color
qualia
structures
children
(3
12-y-old
Japan
6
8-y-old
China)
compared
these
those
Japanese
adults.
Approximately
half
assessed
3-y-old
completed
experiment
via
our
touch
panel
device
version
had
reliable
responses.
Despite
known
developmental
and/or
cultural
effects
term
usage,
found
were
quite
similar
across
age
groups
cultures.
Our
finding
supports
view
emerge
early.
also
observed
age-related
differences
evaluations
some
pairs,
implied
subtle
changes
behind
experience.

Beyond Accommodation: on the Structural Turn in Computational Functionalist Theories of Consciousness

This
commentary
engages
with
Fleming
and
Shea's
(2024)
recent
work
on
computational
functionalist
theories
of
consciousness
through
a
structural
lens.
We
address
three
key
aspects:
the
role
subjective
experience
in
theory
building,
hypothesis
regarding
local
lateral
connectivity
sensory
areas,
implications
"silent
units"
for
consciousness.
argue
that
while
their
turn
is
welcome,
many
insights
were
previously
predicted
by
Integrated
Information
Theory
(IIT).

coherence

claims
within
paradigm
emphasize
importance
distinguishing
genuine
predictions
from
post-hoc
accommodations
science.
