From persons to general principles: Methodological decisions for idiographic and nomothetic research DOI

Research in psychology can have various foci, ranging from the psychological dynamics of single individuals to generalization across individuals, often termed idiographics and nomothetics, respectively. However, terminological ambiguities limited communication clarity about nomothetics. Importantly, whether studies are suitable for idiographic and/or nomothetic inferences is not categorical but rather a matter degree. Therefore, we propose list concrete, better-defined methodological aspects characterizing individual studies. Specifically, highlight 16 different decisions researchers make pertaining (1) research question, (2) design, (3) analyses interpretation. These introduced with focus on personality apply broadly. The academic debates regarding the psychiatric relevance of gaming disorder continue largely because lived experiences treatment-seekers remain mostly unstudied. This registered report addresses above research gap with a longitudinal design that pursues comparative descriptive understanding how intensive evolve in both clinical and non-clinical life situations. Accompanied by rich health survey, interpretative phenomenological analysis was adapted to understand in-depth interview data from treatment-seeking (n=5) esports-playing (n=4) participants, latter which did not experience any gaming-related problems. interviews were carried out as 1-year follow-up. study finds relationships be experienced through multidimensional cyclicality. For treatment-seekers, this manifests shift problem processing involves search for new meanings; meanwhile, meanings can rapidly adapt unexpected events.
