Abstract The perception of the internal milieu is thought to reflect beliefs and prior knowledge about expected state body, rather than only actual interoceptive states. This study investigated whether heartbeat could be illusorily distorted towards subjective beliefs, such that threat expectations suffice induce a false increased frequency. Participants were instructed focus on their cardiac activity report heartbeat, either tapping along it (Experiment 1) or silently counting 2) while ECG was recorded. While completing this task, different cues provided valid predictive information intensity an upcoming cutaneous stimulation (high- vs. low- pain). Results showed participants heart rate increase over anticipation high- low-pain stimuli belief perceptually instantiated, as shown by reports. Importantly, perceived not mirrored real rate. Metacognitive feelings are affective experiences that concern the subject’s mental processes and capacities. Paradigmatic examples include feeling of familiarity, confidence, or tip-of-the-tongue experience. In this article, we advance an account metacognitive based on predictive-processing framework. The core tenet predictive processing is brain a hierarchical hypothesis-testing mechanism, predicting sensory input basis prior experience updating predictions incoming prediction error. According to proposed account, arise out process in which visceral changes serve as cues predict error dynamics relating particular process. expected rate prediction-error reduction corresponds valence at emerging feeling. use model agent’s situation way both descriptive directive. These policies span trajectories across bodily action, interoceptive changes, together transform epistemic landscape within unfold.

While interoception is of major neuroscientific interest, its precise definition and delineation from exteroception continue to be debated. Here, we propose a functional distinction between based on computational concepts sensor-effector loops. Under this view, the classification sensory inputs as serving or depends loop they feed into, for control either bodily (physiological biochemical) environmental states. We explain utility perspective by examining perception skin temperature, one most challenging cases distinguishing exteroception. Specifically, conceptualising thermoception inference about thermal state body (including skin), which directly coupled thermoregulatory processes. This view emphasises coupling regulation (control) defining property (inference) connects contemporary theories brain-body interactions.

The concept of agency, or an individual's sense control over their actions and external events, is important in the context peritraumatic dissociation, its cardinal importance post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This article provides a roadmap for development agency-based therapies future, along with offering "enactive" perspective on trauma. We discuss clinical implications this terms techniques interventions to mitigate symptomatology. also potential use sensorimotor technologies, such as gesture sonification devices, enhance restore agency during PTSD recovery.

Aesthetic chills are an embodied peak emotional experience induced by stimuli such as music, films, and speeches characterized dopaminergic release. The consequences of in terms valence arousal still debated the existing empirical data is conflicting. In this study, we tested effects ChillsDB, open-source repository chills-inducing stimuli, on ratings 600+ participants. We found that participants experiencing reported significantly more positive greater during experience, compared to who did not chills. This suggests may influence one’s perception affective evaluation context, favor theoretical models emphasizing role interoceptive signals process decision-making. also interesting pattern participants, which tended harmonize toward a similar mean after experiment, though initially disparately distributed. discuss significance these results for diagnosis treatment disorders Parkinson’s, schizophrenia, depression.

Abstract We introduce ChillsDB the first validated database of audiovisual stimuli eliciting aesthetic chills (goosebumps, psychogenic shivers) in a US population. To discover “in wild”, we devised bottom-up, ecologically-valid method consisting searching for mentions emotion’ somatic markers user comments throughout social media platforms (YouTube and Reddit). successfully captured 204 chills-eliciting videos three categories: music, film, speech. then tested top 50 on 600+ participants gold standard 10 with 0.9 probability generating chills. Long-term space missions require a good understanding of human adaptation to hostile environments in space. Some professional have constraints that are isolating, confined, extreme, or unusual constraints. They can serve as analogs for studying challenge their environmental disrupt the balance between demands environment and resources mobilized by individuals. This disruption homeostasis leads increased stress, decreased performance, poor overall health these professionals. Nevertheless, analogs, also offer information better identifying individual psychological cognitive effective adapting caused exceptional environments. Studies suggest mindfulness (i.e., awareness emerges paying attention purposefully, present moment, without judgment experience is unfolding moment moment) may be relevant candidate dealing with issues. Thus, we address resource face based on experiences analog military contexts. We propose open discussions new countermeasures focused developing mindfulness, especially through use technologies (e.g., “immersive reality” others), increase programs tailored needs astronauts long journeys.
