Adherence to the Mediterranean diet in 5 Mediterranean countries: A descriptive analysis of the DELICIOUS project

Background:
The
Mediterranean
diet
is
considered
a
healthy
dietary
pattern
associated
with
substantial
health
benefits.
While
its
application
at
global
level
rather
difficult
due
to
the
intricate
features
eradicated
into
cultural
heritage
of
populations
living
in
countries
facing
basin,
preservation
such
areas
crucial
maintain
good
status
current
and
future
generations.
Objective:
To
assess
adherence
children
adolescents
5
participating
DELICIOUS
project.
Methods:
An
online
survey
was
conducted
involving
2011
parents
from
Spain,
Italy,
Lebanon,
Egypt,
Portugal.
KIDMED
score
applied
24-h
recalls
their
children's
diets
used
cross-references
background
lifestyle
variables.
Results:
Children
Lebanon
Portugal
are
more
adherent
than
counterparts
other
countries.
Some
specific
aspects
related
were
common,
as
olive
oil
consumption,
daily
fruit
vegetable
intake,
well
habits
including
having
breakfast
limited
sweets.
Others,
second
portion
vegetable,
adequate
consumption
fish,
nuts,
cereals
(for
breakfast),
frequent
fast
foods
underscored
abandonment
certain
features.
Older
inadequate
sleep
duration,
longer
screen
time,
low
physical
activity
levels,
older
lower
educational
level,
family
income,
rural
had
significantly
scores.
Conclusions:
This
study
provides
important
information
on
among
region
may
help
setting
targets
for
nutrition
interventions
aiming
promotion.
