Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common and slow-progressing neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor non-motor symptoms, including gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunctions. Over the last years, microbiota-gut-brain (MGB) axis emerging as bacterial-neuro-immune ascending pathway that contributes to progression of PD. Indeed, PD patients are changes in gut microbiota composition, alterations intestinal epithelial barrier (IEB) enteric neurogenic/inflammatory responses that, besides determining disturbances, contribute brain pathology. There is increasing evidence that microbial-based therapies can be useful in people with Parkinson’s disease (PD). In this viewpoint, we provide a state-of-the-art review of the clinical and pre-clinical for probiotics prebiotics PD. Currently, short-term studies, including double-blind placebo-controlled randomized trials, have demonstrated safety, efficacy primarily improving constipation-related symptoms.
